Toyisha Bethea-Rizo possesses a true passion for cooking. Her culinary career began early on, inspired by the premature loss of her mother at the tender age of ten. She would cook for her teachers and experiment with different foods earning her the nickname of Toyisha Surprise. As she matured she continued to prepare dishes for family and friends. She joined the healthcare industry for a short time and enjoyed helping people but was not fulfilled.
In 2012, she enrolled in the Culinary Institute of Long Island to perfect her craft. Throughout her matriculation, she learned about the science of food. During this time, she also learned more about the business of food. Toyisha’s culinary repertoire flourished during an internship at Optimum in Woodbury, NY where she developed and refined her culinary techniques. She graduated in 2014 with her certification and license.
After graduating from the Culinary Institute of Long Island, Toyisha sought opportunities to further develop her own creativity. She became immediately active with the NYC Food and Wine Festival. This gave her the opportunity to prepare meals alongside Rachel Ray, Marcus Samuelson, Paula Dean and other well-known chefs.
She continued to perfect her craft by working in several restaurants both local and national chains throughout Long Island. Holding titles such as sous chef and grill master – eventually achieving the title of head chef at a local establishment in Baldwin, N.Y. Always supporting her community and friends she continued to prepare dishes and meals for special occasions. She officially launched Chef Toy Catering in 2015.
The support of her family and friends thus far has made this a wonderful journey. She looks forward to her future.
